Scope note
Devices used to measure the natural waviness of yarn, which results from the interlacing of the materials' warp and weft. Consisting of two clamps, one fixed in place and the other moveable, these devices fasten yarn in place while exerting tension onto the textile material until it is straightened out. Using the device's tension scale, the user can effectively measure the crimp-free length of the yarn. This measurement is subtracted from the length of the crimped yarn, and the percentage of this difference is expressed as the crimp percentage.
